About this event
Where in the world is Jalama Beach? And why are we going there? You may find the answers to your questions on May 21 when GPX will tour north to Santa Barbara County.
We are familiar and comfortable with the beaches of our metropolitan area, but all the coast of California is dotted with interesting, but not always accessible, beaches. So let’s take a nice drive together, and visit a couple of different beaches to our north.
South of Pt. Conception (the great weather divide), the Santa Barbara County beaches are protected, benign and very popular.
North of Pt. Conception, the ocean is wild and windy, and the first accessible point on the coast is Jalama Beach, reached by a narrow, winding county road. Swimming is discouraged. There is a campground there, very crowded in the summer, and Jalama Beach Store, reputed to make the finest hamburgers in the land. So bring your camera, your windbreaker, and your appetite, and join us on another of GPX's tours to out of the way places.
Several People have asked about making this an overnight. If you wish there are lots of fun places to stay in the Santa Barbara/ Santa Ynez Valley area.
We will start our drive in Ventura, at our usual rendezvous point, Denny's restaurant. From there it is over the mountains through the Santa Ynez Valley to the junction of State Hwy 1. Then State 1 to Jalama Road. Then 13 more miles to the beach. Driving time, about 3 1/2 hours.
NOTE: Blustery conditions are fine, but in the event of a heavy rainstorm in the area, we will cancel for safety reasons. We will keep everyone informed by e-mail.
Suggested donation to the Children's Dental Health Clinic is $10.00 (Cash or check only - at time of check in)
